Will Eisner is considered “the father of modern comics” by many within the graphic novel and sequential art communities. Many of his famous works support anti-fascists ideals and highlight the lived experiences of Jewish immigrant communities. The term sequential art which is used to describe “art form that uses images deployed in a specific order for the purpose of graphic storytelling or conveying information” was created by Eisner. Perhaps one of the most popular forms of sequential art is comic books. Eisner helped to legitimize the comic book in the American imagination and created the industry that we know today of comic books, graphic novels and eventually the import of manga in America.
Due to Will Eisner’s effect on the modern comic industry, the Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards honor the best graphic novels from the past year in subjects such as Best New Series, Best Publication for Kids/Teens/Adults, Best Writer, Best Lettering and more. These awards are considered to be an extremely high honor that one can achieve in the graphic novel community.
