Celebrating Native American Heritage Month

In November, we celebrate and learn about the amazing stories, history, and traditions of Native American communities. Our own Santa Clara County includes the Ohlone peoples, the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe, the Tamien Nation, the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band, and more. We invite you this month to explore our social studies and history online resources here on the Student Portal to learn about Native American communities in more detail.

Native American Heritage Month as it exists today was created in 1990 by President George H.W. Bush. He expanded on and replaced Native American Awareness Week, which was first created in 1976 by President Gerald Fold. Both presidents sought to set aside time to acknowledge the significant contributions and history of indigenous peoples of the United States.
