Finding Beauty in Words: Poetry Month Celebration and Contest Awaits!

Teen Poetry Contest

What month is it? It is April, which means it is National Poetry Month.  Poetry is a fun and creative way to express your thoughts and feelings, allowing you to play with words and rhythms. Writing poems can be exciting, as it gives you the freedom to create your own worlds and share your experiences. Plus, reading and writing poetry can help improve our mental health by providing a safe outlet for emotions and encouraging self-reflection.

Do you share the feeling of Charles Baudelaire, whose birthday is in April:

I want to compose pure poetry
Lying down near the sky, as astrologers do;
Up there, next to bell towers, I’ll listen in my dreams
To their solemn hymns carried by the wind.

If you want to get lost in the word of poetry or just immerse yourself for a few minutes head over to Columbia Granger’s World of PoetryIt is a rich, searchable treasure house of everything related to poets and their art, including poems, biographies, commentaries and their history. A favorite feature of the site is that you can look up poems by their subjects too. E.g. I found the poem quoted above by looking for poems about imagination. Give it a try.

Are you ready to write? If you are in grades 6-12 join the Library’s Teen Poetry Contest! Visit https://sccld.org/contests/ and send us your poems! (Please note, by following this link you will be leaving the Student Portal website and visiting the library’s main website.)
