April is National Poetry Month

The first of April, some do say,

Is set apart for All Fools’ Day,

But why the people call it so

Nor I nor they themselves do know.

Poets and poetry-lovers alike, this is the month for you! National Poetry Month is celebrated every April since it was first introduced in 1996. Show your appreciation of rhythm and rhyme by writing, reading, or reciting some time this month. Poetry can be serious, witty, imaginative, even goofy – anything goes! What style of writing speaks to you?

For some inspiration, or if you just want to read your favorite poems and poets, page through Columbia Granger’s World of Poetry, the online resource for current and past poetry from around the world. Search poems by title, line, or phrase, or look up an author. You can find famous authors including Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson, Edger Allen Poe, and more, as well as contemporary works from modern poets.

The Library holds a Teen Poetry Contest every April for students in grades 6-12. Ready to write? Visit https://sccld.org/contests/ to join, and send us your poems! (Please note, by following this link you will be leaving the Student Portal website and visiting the Library’s main website.)
